What our garden design experts expect to be ‘on trend’ for luxury outdoor spaces in 2024

With 2024 well underway, just like every year, the world of garden design is evolving. In turn, offering exciting possibilities to transform your garden into a haven of tranquillity and beauty. At The Garden Project Co., we anticipate several trends that will shape gardens and outdoor spaces for the remainder of the year, and beyond. Let’s explore these trends and how you can incorporate them into your bespoke garden design.

Outdoor Fireplaces are the next big thing

Over the years we have seen various trends in the garden design world from blue painted fences and decking to crazy paved patio areas and everything in between.

With our tastes ever changing and wanting something more and more unique in our outdoor spaces. Something to wow our friends and family and being able to use our gardens for longer periods of the year.

At The Garden Project Co., we are now seeing an increase in enquiries regarding heating in the garden. Christopher Howkins, our Design Director, is a huge advocate for the outdoor fireplace due to its versatility and varied aesthetic.

"A garden is often referred to as the fourth room of the house, when adding an outdoor fireplace this takes that statement to the next level, often with a very contemporary twist."

Should I choose a Fire Pit or Outdoor Fireplace?

A question Chris is often asked is fire pit or fireplace? Fire pits are arguably in easier reach for the majority of our clients for the modest size and less intricate install. But if you’re wanting to have something that little bit extra special, and have the space for it, Chris will hands down recommend the outdoor fireplace. He often describes this feature as “the ultimate accessory“ in the garden, a true gathering place for friends and family and a real talking point. As the year progresses, we anticipate installing many more outdoor fireplaces for our clients and their luxury outdoor spaces.

Water Features

Next up is water features, they really do captivate the eye and add a sense of serenity to gardens. And in 2024, we expect a surge in demand for creatively designed water fountains, streams, and other bespoke water features.

Trending Water Fountain Styles;

  1. Contemporary Cascades

A true contemporary water feature, minimalistic and sleek designs that complement modern garden aesthetics.

  1. Nature-inspired Ponds

Integrating natural elements, such as rocks and native plants, for a harmonious look.

  1. Spherical Water Features

From stone to steel, these always make an impact. A true way of adding a look of luxury to your outdoor space, which look stunning all year round. We’re huge advocates of this look when executed right.

Vegetable Patches & Planters

Growing your own vegetables and fruits at home is gaining popularity, each and every year. The benefits extend beyond fresh produce, as it also contributes to a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle.

The benefits of growing your own vegetables & fruits at home

  1. Healthy Eating

Enjoy organic, nutrient-rich produce straight from your garden.

  1. Reduced Carbon Footprint

Minimise your environmental impact by sourcing food locally.

Pergolas to Add Structure to your Garden

Pergolas add structure, height and style to gardens. In 2024, we see a rise in interest for these timeless features. Especially when paired with atmospheric lighting.

What’s the difference between a Pergola and Pergoda?

In short, pergodas have a solid roof which is made up of slats, whereas pergolas have a louvred and sliding roof for greater versatility.

  1. Classic Pergolas

Open structures with cross-beams and an open roof for a light and airy feel.

  1. Pergodas

A contemporary twist, often featuring additional elements like screens for a more enclosed space. These are less versatile but a lot better for the colder months or if you require a shaded area in your garden design.

Quality Stone Paving

The choice of paving can significantly impact the overall aesthetics of your garden. London Stone, known for its quality, is expected to be a sought-after option throughout 2024. Hence why we hold a solid relationship with the supplier, to ensure we can offer the very best stone paving products in the gardens we install.

We love London Stone’s clean look and its durability for higher footfall gardens, especially those areas with heavy plants or garden features. It really does seem to add a touch of sophistication to any garden.

Incorporating Native Plants

Native plants are gaining recognition for their ability to thrive in the local climate, promoting biodiversity and sustainability.

Popular plants found in UK Gardens in 2024;

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): Renowned for its aromatic fragrance and distinctive purple spikes, Lavender is a staple in UK gardens. Not only does it add a sensory delight, but it also attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, contributing to the garden’s biodiversity.

Bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta): Embodying the essence of spring, Bluebells carpet woodlands with their bell-shaped, vibrant blue flowers. Their natural beauty and ability to thrive in shaded areas make them a cherished addition to British gardens.

Roses (Rosa spp.): An iconic symbol of love and beauty, Roses come in various colours and varieties, offering elegance and charm to any garden. From climbing roses on pergolas to classic rose beds, these flowering shrubs are timeless.

Foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea): Towering spires of tubular flowers characterise Foxgloves, creating a dramatic display in cottage gardens. Loved for their height and ability to attract bees, they bring a touch of the wild to cultivated spaces.

Hellebores (Helleborus spp.): Known as the Christmas Rose or Lenten Rose, Hellebores bloom in late winter or early spring. Their nodding, cup-shaped flowers in shades of white, pink, and purple offer a unique and delicate charm.

Geraniums (Geranium spp.): With their vibrant blooms and low maintenance, Geraniums are a popular choice for borders and containers. These hardy perennials come in various colours and are known for their long-lasting flowering period.

Daffodils (Narcissus spp.): Symbolising the arrival of spring, Daffodils brighten up gardens with their cheerful, trumpet-shaped flowers. Their diverse range of varieties adds a burst of colour to borders and lawns.

Heather (Calluna vulgaris): A versatile evergreen, Heather offers year-round interest with its small, bell-shaped flowers and needle-like foliage. It thrives in acidic soils, making it a perfect choice for rockeries and heathland-inspired gardens.

Astrantia (Astrantia spp.): Known as the Masterwort, Astrantia produces intricate, star-like flowers. Their unique appearance and ability to thrive in partial shade make them an enchanting addition to woodland gardens.

Delphiniums (Delphinium spp.): Renowned for their tall spikes of vibrant, spurred flowers, Delphiniums add vertical interest to borders. Their range of colours and stately presence make them a favourite in traditional and cottage garden designs.
