The team was tasked with designing a maternity courtyard in the heart of a new wing of Luton Dunstable hospital. This high-profile and extremely rewarding project required creating a calming and relaxing environment for expectant and new mothers. The brief emphasised the need for an 'oasis' amidst the busy hospital setting, while adhering to strict safety and accessibility requirements for public use, including accommodations for wheelchairs and hospital beds.
We adopted a soft and gentle approach to the design, incorporating effortlessly flowing curves and carefully positioned floating benches. Christopher, leading the team, believed these elements were key to achieving a relaxing atmosphere. The planting scheme and lighting were meticulously planned to enhance the tranquil ambiance. Safety and accessibility were prioritized throughout the design process, ensuring the space was welcoming and functional for all users.
The completed maternity courtyard features a harmonious blend of curved pathways, floating benches, and thoughtfully selected plantings. Soft lighting creates a soothing atmosphere, particularly important during evening hours. The design successfully balances aesthetic appeal with practical considerations, providing ample space for wheelchairs and hospital beds to manoeuvre. The result is a serene retreat that offers a stark contrast to the bustling hospital environment.
