The Brief

Our clients in Stevington, wanted to make better use of their existing garden, with a generous entertaining area that connected naturally with the property while working around the established planting and character of the space.

The design called for a large, flowing patio rather than a conventional rectangular terrace, using a sweeping curved edge to soften the hard landscaping and create a more natural transition into the lawn and planted borders.

Our Approach

At the heart of the project is approximately 49m² of Raj Green sandstone paving from London Stone which forms the patio. The stone’s natural variation in colour and tone brings warmth and character to the terrace and works particularly well alongside the property’s traditional brickwork.

We installed contrasting clay-style block paving in a traditional herringbone pattern throughout the adjoining areas and to form the sweeping curved border around the main terrace as the perfect complement to this new terrace.

We also incorporated decorative gravel around the property and in transitional areas, providing a practical finish while helping the landscaping sit naturally alongside the house and established garden.

Dreams To Reality

This project involved extensive ground preparation and excavation before constructing the new hard-landscaped areas from the ground up. New porcelain and block-paved surfaces were installed, and levels and transitions were carefully managed.

The new sweeping patio was designed to maximise the available space within the garden without dominating it.

Particular attention was paid to the finer details of the project, such as the curved block edging, the changes in paving material and the relationship between the terrace, existing planting and lawn to help the different elements of the garden sit together as one cohesive space.

The Finished Project

The completed garden is now a substantial outdoor entertaining area that is immediately accessible from the house. The large terrace offers plenty of room for dining, relaxing and entertaining within the garden.

Rather than creating one large expanse of paving, we installed a combination of porcelain, herringbone blockwork and curved detailing alongside established planting to give the garden structure and character. The sweeping curve of the terrace draws the eye around the garden, with surrounding planting softening its edges and helping the space feel established rather than newly installed.

The result is a practical, elegant and inviting garden that complements the property and gives our clients a considerably more usable outdoor living space.
